Vision accounts for nearly 90% of our learning. A young child learns about his environment and the people around him through vision. Early developmental skills and beginning concepts are acquired through the use of vision. Hence, a child with impaired or no vision is at risk of developmental delays, and deficits in concept formation.

It is important therefore that the child with a visual impairment, receives intervention as soon as possible to reduce the incidence of delays and deficiencies.

Visual Impairment is a low incident disability, and the unique and specialised needs of children with visual impairments are not readily recognised by most people. It is important however, that all children with visual impairments have access to highly specialised support services to ensure that they are able to maximise their potential in any educational setting.

The pages here are to give viewers an idea of the areas of support for a child with visual impairments. Because the needs of each individual is different, the information contained here is not a definitive solution for all children with visual impairments. It is important that the services of a specialist in educating children with visual impairment is engaged to adequately meet the needs of the child.

This site is created primarily for parents who want more information on how they can help their child with a visual impairment.

It is also useful for teachers from both mainstream and specialised education environment to find out more about the specialised needs of children with visual impairments.
